Mark King(1931- )
Mark King was born in Bombay, the son of British parents. His years there have given him a cultured eloquence derived from his life in India during the final years of the British Raj. By 1947, King had graduated from La College, Calcutta. By the time he was sixteen he had been exposed to more culture, art and history than most people receive in a lifetime.. He studied Persian paintings, architecture and poetry,as well as Indian music and dance. In 1949, King received a scholarship to Bournemouth College of Art to pursue painting, sculpture, architecture and theatre design. His studies ultimately led to a seven year love affair with the legitimate stage, including time spent as the resident designer at the Oxford playhouse Theatre. King's desire to return to the canvas medium caused him to abandoned the theater in 1961, when he moved to Paris to dedicate himself to painting. There, he continued his studies at Beauxs Arts and the Louvre. During that period, King devoted himself to studying the works of Degas, Delacroix and other European master who made their romantic impact upon his own work. King spent next seven years refining his own technique and traveled widely across Europe to bask in its artistic wealth. In 1968, King felt the nee do expand his horizon which led him to America. His painting reflects his results of his training, his cultured upbringing, and expressions of love for life as he brings brilliant techniques of brush work, color and composition to the canvas.
